Elect Jessica Fortune Barker because our children are worth a Fortune!
I am a native Huntsville resident and Huntsville City Schools alum. I graduated with honors in the magnet program at the former JO Johnson High School in 2002. I have lived in the District 8 community for most of my life and have witnessed first hand, both the disparities and unity that this community has encountered. As your neighbor, I promise to continue to work hand in hand with each of you to make sure that we leave a stronger, better commUNITY to the generations to come after us!
I have been a strong vocal advocate for fair and equitable education for ALL students for many years. Serving as President of the Parent Council for the former Barbara Drive Head Start Center then going on to sit on and serve as an education adviser to the Madison County Community Action Agency board of directors, I realized that Alabama's children are placed at an educational disadvantage from the beginning of their educational journey. Due to factors such as a lack of funding, incomparable teacher wages, lack of access to required coursework, weakened teacher rights, and removal of humanities and vocational programs from the curriculum (to name a few), Alabama's children are put at an educational disadvantage when compared to other states. As your advocate, I promise to work tirelessly to put Alabama back into a competitive status for best educational system in the nation.
I am a devoted wife to my soul mate and lifetime love, Joseph. I am driven by the love of my four children, Jennae, Darianne, Joniece, and Joseph, Jr. I am dedicated to making sure as a mother and role model, that the children whose lives I will impact will receive an educational environment that is not only preparing them to be competitive in an aggressive workforce, but is also an environment that the children look forward to engaging in! We have to make education interesting again. The saying goes, "It takes a village to raise a child". As a fellow parent, I am ready to begin building that village again!
